To be fair, I'm really only familiar with FF7 itself and haven't played any of the sequel/prequel/(AU?) games, so I only have half a grasp on Zack's character. From what I know, though, I think it would work! Lloyd is definitely a dork and full of shounen protag spirit, and the power of crazy hair can make up all the difference! /o/
